Last week Gaynor one of our Physios from our Falcon practice explained what balance is. So, Now that you know what balance is and why it is important, here are a few exercises you can use to improve your balance. When doing these exercises make sure you are standing near a wall or bench, so you have something to hold onto if you overbalance.
The first exercise is the easiest. To perform this exercise, stand with your feet close together so your toes and heels are touching. Keep still for 30 seconds without holding on.
The second exercise is slightly harder. This time take a step forward with one leg. Keep still for 30 seconds. Then step forward with the other leg and hold for 30 seconds.
The last exercise is the hardest. Stand on one leg like a seagull. Hold for 30 seconds. Then repeat for the other leg.
Once these exercises get easy then you can try with your eyes closed. This makes the exercises even trickier.
If you have noticed a decrease in your balance over time or are recovering from a leg injury come see as at Miami or Lakelands Physiotherapy for a comprehensive balance assessment and individualised exercise program to keep you on your feet.
